Interview with Montecito Roasting Company

Posted on July 30, 2014 |

Coffee lovers, drink your heart out! There’s a new kid in town and he’s revolutionizing everyone’s taste buds.

Montecito Roasting Company, owned and operated by Jon Taylor, got started just 1 year ago and is quickly becoming the in-demand coffee supplier in the Santa Barbara area due largely in part to their highly addictive cold brew concentrate.

Every half-gallon mason jar in my fridge now holds the tastiest, richest cold brew coffee I’ve ever had the pleasure of sipping. And if you’re looking to kick it up a notch, try pairing it with Blue Diamond Vanilla Almond Breeze Milk or (even better!) Zico’s chocolate coconut milk.

Mind = Blown.

And since their slogan is Know Your Roaster, we put together a little Proust-inspired questionnaire so we could do just that:

Q: What inspires you?

A: I’m inspired by people who do what they love.  These are the people who seem to be the happiest and most fulfilled people I know.

What profession would you most like to try?

Leather working.  Given the right tools and materials I think I could make some pretty awesome sandals.  That or custom motorcycle building.  Really, I just like to make things.

What profession would you not like to try?

Dentistry.  I have the utmost respect for those in the industry but I have no interest whatsoever in trying it myself.

What talent would you most like to have?

The ability to leave anyone I meet with the feeling that they are important.  If not that, then the ability to draw Elvis in a latte.  Seriously, my latte art needs some work.

What is your idea of the perfect meal?

A mound of Alaskan King crab and grilled artichoke.

What is your favorite food?

Mexican. Always Mexican. I love simple street tacos with absurd amounts of cilantro and salsa – I will eat those until I’m ready to burst and then I will eat more.  My favorite in town is Taqueria La Colmena on Milpas because of their secret peanut salsa.  The cook won’t crack on the ingredients and I’ve tried many times to create something similar.  I’m not even close.  I guess I’ll just have to keep going back for more.

What is your favorite drink?

Spritz! Anna and I first learned about spritz while exploring the streets of Cortina D’Ampezzo in the winter of 2011.  We walked into a prosciutteria/bar and everyone was drinking these bright orange drinks. When we asked what it was we received an excited “Spritz” and quickly had two in our hands.  This is not to be confused with a spritzer.  A Spritz is Prosecco and Aperol (or Campari if you like it more bitter) served on ice with a slice of orange.  We quickly learned that Italians drink them morning, noon, and night.  And for good reason – they’re magical.  They also have a sentimental appeal and are a reminder of not only my first trip off the continent, but also my first trip to Italy with my wife.

What do you consider the most overrated ingredient?

I don’t understand the question.  If an ingredient isn’t necessary, then why use it?  This is probably why I’m not a baker.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being able to do what I love with the people I love whether professionally or recreationally.

What is your favorite motto?

Happy wife, happy life.  I don’t care how it sounds.  It’s true.

Update to this blog post: Montecito Roasting Co has since changed its name to Refugio Roasting Co.
